Kolsassberg

Kolsassberg is a small town set at 906m altitude which has around 750 inhabitants and is part of the parish of Kolsass. Kolsassberg lies to the south of the River Inn on the western slope of the Weerbachtal in the Tux Voralps, with wonderful views to the Karwendel mountain range. The town which was first mentioned in documents in 1196 comprises the four towns of Außerberg, Innerberg, Hochhäuser and Merans. The town of Kolsassberg can be accessed via the road through Kolsass. The road continues on to Sagalm (1712m) at the foot of the ‘Roten Wand’ (2252 m) and to Weidener Hütte (1799 m). From there an earlier significant crossing runs across Nafingalm, the 2292 m Geiseljoch into Tuxertal and Zillertal.

The most significant historic building in the district is the ‘Rettenberg Castle Ruins’. Today only the remains of this once superb castle are left; the knight Florian Waldauf had the New Rettenberg built in the years following 1492. Since that time the ruins have been privately owned and its romantic and impressive atmosphere continues to be very appealing. The popular and well-known castle festival held on the third weekend in July is a unique and special highlight.
The little mountain church in Kolsassberg which was consecrated in 1974 can be seen from quite a distance away. Thanks to its small family nature it is especially popular for small-scale family parties such as christenings and weddings.

Kolsassberg provides an optimum starting point for wonderful hikes, Nordic Walking tours and mountain bike tours. Whether it is a wild romantic hike across the suspension bridges, to the high Alpine pastures on the local mountain the ‘Rote Wand’, or to the surrounding peaks – there is something for everyone. All around there are lots of notable sights to visit in Silberregion Karwendel.

In winter you also get to try out your first turns by  heading up on the practice lift; while the experts among you can go further to the ski areas which are close by. Or how about having a go at some fun tobogganing? The natural toboggan run which heads up to the ‘Gartlach’ snack station is appealing. Experience the natural surroundings in all their beauty – take some time to enjoy the peace and quiet and the fresh air in the Tirol mountains!
