Kolsass

The town of Kolsass is around 10 kilometres from Schwaz and lies at 553 metres altitude. With its 1500 inhabitants this little town is a beautiful place for a relaxing holiday in Silberregion Karwendel.

This Tirol town is first mentioned in documents dating back to the year 1050. Yet even a century earlier there must have been a parish in this area. At the end of the 8th century a ‘mother parish’ was there.

Kolsass as it is today was originated from two settlements, to which the town centre with the church and the current town of Mühlbach belonged. The name ‘Kolsass’ is presumed to have come from  Rhaeto-Romanic. It is made up of the words ‘Col’ and ‘Sass’, which mean ‘hill’ and ‘rock’ respectively, and describe the hill on which Rettenberg castle was built on, which today is part of the town in the neighbouring district of Kolsassberg.
In times past goods were taken from Kolsass via Weertal to Südtirol.

In addition to summer activities such as running, Nordic Walking, hiking and mountain biking, there is a small ski lift in Kolsassberg and tracked slopes in Silberregion Karwendel which await guests in winter. The numerous toboggan runs in the region also invite you to have a go at tobogganing. Those who prefer to keep to the free terrain would be best advised to head across the pristine fields of snow on snow-shoes toward the summit crosses. For all those of you who want to discover the winter landscape in a manner which is a little less sporty, a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride or a leisurely winter hike are recommended.
