St.Georgenbergpilgrimage church
St.Georgenbergin Stallental is a special place of pilgrimage in every respect.
On a rock formation around 100 metres in height the pilgrimage church of St.Georgenberg welcomes its pilgrims. According to chronicles St. Georgenberg was founded in the first half of the 10th century by Rathold von Aibling, who is said to have lived in a cave here to begin with. The Benedictine cloister, which today is housed in Fiecht monastery, was originally housed in St.Georgenberg, however it was decided after a few major fires and upon outbreak of plague that the monastery be moved into the valley and this took place in 1708 after 2 years of building.
In this "three-fold place of pilgrimage" of St Georg (gothic pietà), the Holy Blood Relic and Sorrowful Mother are enshrined, the latter is there to be worshiped in the first instance.
Today’s pilgrimage church was the abbey church until 1705 and the Lindenkirche dating to the 15th century on a slope opposite was used as the pilgrimage church.
There are two different pilgrimage paths on which you can head out on pilgrimage today to St. Georgenberg pilgrimage church: from Stans through the wild and romantic Wolfsklamm, or via the pilgrimage path which starts in Fiecht.
