There was a plan in existence even in 1742 to build a new church in Mitterweerberg. Only more than a century later was work able to begin based on plans by diocese master builder Josef von Stadl. The plan made provisions for a Neo-Romanesque style church, as a three-bay basilica with two façade towers. The church curate got the money together for this new construction within a very short space of time so that by 1866 the provisional consecration could be made. Archbishop Gasser consecrated the building on the day of the feast of Corpus Christi in 1872. In memory of the dogma pronounced just before the building of the church of Maria the Immaculate and of the appearance of Mary in the French town of pilgrimage Lourdes, the new church was consecrated as Mary Immaculate.
The two façade towers which were built in Neo-Romanesque basilica style in the main portal area face north, looking toward the Inntal. The towers which have pyramid spires are covered in ornamental glazed tiles. The W-Portal comes from the old Petruskirche from the 16th century. The apsis ends in a semi-circle on the exterior. On the south-west side of the church is the war memorial which has a fresco by Schwaz man Toni Kirchmair.
Maria Immaculate Parish Church underwent renovations to its exterior in 1992/93.
Via the main portal you get to an entrance hall beneath the choir loft. This area is bordered by a barrel vault. The 3-bay main aisle has a cross-ribbed vault; the chancel has a fan vault. The furnishing throughout is Nazarene and neo-Romanesque. The frescoes by Prof. Philipp Schumacher from Innsbruck and Schwaz man Franz Ertl are a continuous hymn to the Blessed Mother. The free-standing neo-Romanesque high altar protects the relics of the holy martyr Aurelia in a gilded shrine, in a mensa. The floor was renewed, the organ gallery was extended and a new people’s altar created. Weerberg artist Franz Knapp was appointed to create an new pieta.
