In the Middle Ages Rottenburg was a centre for knights and noblemen, and was the economic hub and administrative centre of Tirol. The area, which has a conservation protection order, is looked after with a great deal of devotion by volunteers and friends of the Rottenburg. The reconciliation steps in Rottenburg Ruins are a reminder of the reconciliation of the counts of Rottenburg by St. Notburga.
In 1957 a chapel to honour St. Notburga, who died in Rottenburg in 1313, was built from the stones of the castle ruins.
The highest spruce trees in Tirol can be seen beneath this natural conservation area, which is close by.
