Route outline
At a continuously steep 1700 metres altitude, the wide rocky pyramids of the Hochnissl dominate the Wiesenplateau on the Vomperberg. The continuously sunny ascent from this side is only for expert climbers and provides an exceptionally tough and demanding tour which will consume all your energy reserves. From experience the peaks are especially tiring, but are a very rewarding experience.
Route: From Vomperberg around 1/2 hour on a wide trail toward Vomper Loch. Taking a turn-off to the right, now on a narrow path on serpentines and hillside crossings to Dawald hunting lodge. The zigzag path heads across a ridge of mountain pines and through Bärental into the Große Kar beneath the Niedernissltürmen. Keeping left (pay attention to the markers!) across boulder-strewn terrain and a steep craggy section on the green shoulder area on the Niedernissl. The 400 metres altitude which follow proceed in lots of hairpin bends up to the southern flank. Then take a left – some cable rope sections provide support – on the rocky ridge to the summit of the Hochnissl, 2546 m. Descent via the same route.
Bring plenty of liquids with you – there are no springs from the branch-off for Vomper Loch path. The only opportunity to stop for refreshments is in Gasthaus Karwendelrast at the start and the end point.
Special features: Very long, very steep and absolutely stunning. Sure footedness and a sense of direction for this un-tracked boulder-strewn route are definitely required.
