Route outline
The mighty massif of the Gamsjoch protrudes a good 1200 metres from the Großen Ahornboden. The ascent is correspondingly long and tiring. However the toil and stamina you put in is richly rewarded. You get to enjoy your snack in the sublime viewing area, sitting at eye level with the infamous walls of the Karwendel – and the view down to the Ahornboden literally takes your breath away.
Route: From the car park at Alpengasthof you head via the meadows on striking fosses which go down between the Gumpenspitze and Gamsjoch. You soon come across marking points and a clear path which heads via ground strewn with boulders and some really steep sections into the green basin of the Gumpenkar, then continues on to the Gumpenjöchl. At the saddle the route takes a right on the path to the summit. The ascent is on another 480 metres altitude and across two rocky sections. Many hopeful climbers stay on the secondary summit, but the route continues via a short, yet quite exposed ridge section, to the slightly higher main summit (2452 m).
The rural and superb, yet somewhat longer and knee-friendly variant via Lalidersalm Hochleger toward Hohljoch and down to Engalmen is recommended for the return journey – where you really can’t miss out on a stop-off for refreshments. Stop-off available at Alpengasthof Eng, close to the car park.
Special features: Strenuous, demanding mountain tour which requires sure footedness to the great summit of the Karwendel.
