Route outline
The route to the Gilfert via its rear side is not as gentle as going across the Weerberg. However the ascent to the Gamsstein and the Graukopf which is in front of the Gilfert stand out especially due to the particularly characteristic small regions which are strangely beautiful. The Gilfert provides an impressive panorama at the summit with almost all the famous peaks of the western Alps. The longer return route via Lafasteralm and the ‘Gamssteingräben’ (fosses) are gems of nature conservation, an area which has been completely left to nature, without any human intervention.
From Loassattel you head initially slightly ascending through fields of Alpine roses and in August past the yellow gentian on the first climb, the Kleiner Gamsstein which provides a superb panoramic view into the valleys. After conquering this initial summit you head at first on an easy ascent, which eventually becomes steep, to the Grosser Gamsstein. The route heads through fields of mountain pine, romantically suffused with little biotopes and stones covered in lichen. After a brief rest on the summit the route heads initially on a level via a ridge, which then winds steeply upwards into the stony terrain on the Graukopf. From Graukopf to the summit of the Gilfert it’s then almost like a stroll! After a well-deserved rest on the summit the route now winds on the green side of the Weerberg to Lafasteralm’s Hochleger and Niederleger. Here you get to gaze in wonderment at the beautiful zinc-coated wood at the Alpine lodge and with a little bit of luck you can also taste some of the fresh Alpine milk.
A wide path goes initially past the bent-over, centuries-old Swiss stone pine trees through Dranwald to a hunter’s lodge. Soon afterwards a very romantic, unspoiled section starts which is a pivotal moment for nature lovers. Crossing the little mountain streams which have eaten into the land to create steep fosses, is difficult and requires a great deal of attention. The path then continues via gentle meadows and slopes of mountain pine trees, above the Schneebrugg up to Gasthaus Loas (famous for its ‘Schnitzel’), and from there it is a short final climb back to Loassattel.
Special features: Climb with a superb view to the Inntal and Zillertal. Unspoiled biotope on the Gamsstein and on the return journey in the Gamsstein fosses (difficult in the fosses). A highlight!
