Route outline
Many routes lead to the Kellerjoch, Schwaz’s impressive local mountain. One of the most beautiful is the ‘detour’ from Loassattel via the idyllic Gartalm. By doing this you get to learn about the different aspects of the mountain, where views in each direction are impressive. At the chapel on the summit – 1800 metres altitude above the flat green of the Inn valley – the panorama seems endless: the Karwendel, Rofan, Hohe Tauern, Tuxer-, Zillertaler- and Stubaier Alps. It is no wonder that the Kellerjoch is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Tirol.
Route: From Loassattel hike on the leisurely-paced, climbing Druckbichlsteig through the sunny side of the Kuhmesser in the Gartalm basin. From here it the climb becomes steeper through Alpine terrain which is full of flowers (Alpine roses!) up to the Kellerjochhütte. Not far from here the little chapel is located at the highest point of the Kellerjoch (2344 m) – the narrow path requires sure-footedness and a head for heights. From Kellerjochhütte (opportunity to stop-off and to camp) the route then heads in serpentine bends down to the junction at Naunzstand. Take a left here and follow the signposts for Hochebenweg, continually downhill back to Loassattel, where in Alpengasthof Loas the famous ‘Loas-Schnitzel’ is a temptation.
Most of this hike can be done with children if they have relevant Alpine experience, but not the section of the route from Kellerjochhütte to Kellerjoch, where it is dangerous.
Special features: A rural and delightful circuit with plenty of different views. Especially beautiful when the Alpine roses are in bloom at the end of June
