Route outline
The start of this tour is relatively strenuous, yet the well tarmacced road reduces the pain, and soon you find yourself up high in Arzberg, a district of Schwaz, which is a much brighter area providing an open view into the valley.
Up to Hochpillberg you quickly find your rhythm on the long tarmac ascent, which is broken up by a shorter flat section at Maria Sieg Chapel.
When you get to Hochpillberg car park you've made it. A walk on the thought-provoking "Weg der Sinne" (path of the senses), which is located here above the forest, provides a bit of relaxation. Tip: rest in a hammock on the ‘Weg der Sinne’. You can get back into the valley via the old toboggan run. Note: During the descent don't miss the signposts which take you to Staudachhof.
Opportunities to stop off at the bottom of the Hochpillberg: Gasthof Sumperer (definitely try the
Tirol spare ribs!) on the way up: Bio-Hotel Grafenast, Alpenhof Hubertus,
Ferienhotel Frieden close to Hochpillberg car park, and also Gasthaus Schmadlegg on the
way down, and Gasthof Michlkeller or Gasthof Klausen at the start and end point.
Characteristics:
Sunny ascent on tarmac, rest on the ‘Weg der Sinne’ (which has hammocks!), shady descent on forest road.
