Route outline
In Hinterriß get your bearings and head in a north easterly direction, leave the town on the tarmacced road, before turning off to the left before the bridge, which runs diagonally. This is where the
relatively challenging ascent to Vordersbachau starts - and is on the official route. The steepness of the forest road recommended here really builds up a sweat. Logging measures after wind damage in 2005 has created clear imperfections in the landscape; however ÖBF (Austrian Forestry Service) markings on at least two signs are an indication that nature has done its work here and this nature conservation area is not exploited. The tour heads from Vordersbachau continuing through Stiftswald to the national border, where you head across Fermersbach/Bärnbach. Up to Fereinsalm there is then only 300m altitude remaining and this is relatively easy to surmount when you get a good rhythm going. The forest paths take you up to Fereinsalm – you can continue the journey to Mittenwald, and a circular tour via Scharnitz, Karwendelhaus, Kleiner Ahornboden back to Hinterriß is also possible (approx. 50 km / 1600 m altitude). You are on a section of the classic Karwendel tour, as outlined in the Moser Bike Guide 2 (Tour 34).
Opportunityto stop-off in Fereinsalm and at the start and end point, Gasthof zur Post.
Characteristics:
The route runs along the signposted 453 on forest trails. A wonderful journey in the Karwendel including a stream crossing, steep ascents and to finish the wide open landscape of Fereinsalm.
