Schwaz at the centre of the cycling world

Every year, the silver-mining town of Schwaz spends several days at the centre of the world of cycling. The international Schwaz cycling days shift attention to this cycling metropolis in Tyrol on the second weekend in September.

The 1,000+ participants from Austrian and abroad can expect to enjoy a superlative programme which does justice to all ages and performance categories! From top international cyclists to ambitious leisure cyclists and passionate up-and-coming new talent – these select routes lead through picturesque landscapes and offer plenty of excitement in the historic old town of Schwaz.

In 2010, the organisers of the Union Raiffeisen Tyrol cycling team are running a 3-day range of events for the first time.

The build-up will take place on Friday in the form of the mountain sprint from Weer – Pill – Weerberg, an international mountain race for the elite/u-23 and the ‘Klettermaxen’ climbing race in which anyone can take part.

The day after, the ‘Raiffeisen Altstadtkriterium’ old town race will take place in the picturesque centre of the Schwaz old town: the top stars from Austria and abroad will complete the narrow winding 900 m circular course 60 times, passing over cobblestones in places. Before the elite race begins, the young persons’ race kicks off.

The special thing here is that participants pass by the spectators time and again meaning that there is no time for boredom with cycling fever from start to finish!

Another highlight occurs the next day which is also the date of the finale of the Schwaz cycling days: the Schwaz street prize, which counts towards the Tchibo TOP RAD LIGA, the Austrian national cycling league and which often marks the end to the season. The international professionals/elite/U-23 riders cycle 158 km or 5 circuits of 31.6 km each. They pass through Schwaz old town 5 times – and the battle usually lasts right through to the last few metres!

The International Tyrol Cycle Marathon takes place on the same track at almost the same time – a race for ambitious cyclists who can then measure themselves against the professional and elite riders during the race.

Anyone can take part in the International Tyrol Cycle Marathon for a real taste of cycle race atmosphere. The motto here is: “Being there is everything! All participants who complete the route are winners in themselves!”
