Organ concerts
Schwaz’s parish church, the Maria Himmelfahrt, is a truly superb cathedral. The 300 tonne copper tiles alone, which cover its roof, are evidence of this immense kingdom where, in around 1500, the biggest silver and copper mine brought the Old World to Schwaz. A 500 year old, five-storey roof truss supports this copper tiled roof, which is one-of-a-kind in the world and, along with the Stephansdom in Vienna, is the biggest Gothic roof truss in Austria. Schwaz parish church is also the only four-nave hall church in Central Europe, and in its bell tower the "Maximiliana", cast in 1503, peals - at 4 ½ tonnes in weight it is the biggest church bell in Tirol …
The middle section and the ‘Rückpositiv’ of the great organ in Schwaz parish church was created 270 years ago by the ingenious Franciscan monk from Schwaz Gaudenz Köck. Two symmetrical lateral sections were added to the instrument in 1899. With 3800 pipes the Schwaz organ is the biggest symphonic instrument in the state of Tirol, and is famed as much for its masterful balance as its enchanting tonal richness. In the summer months of July and August international master organists play at the "Orgelfestes Schwaz" concerts, where they expertly present everything that this mighty organ has to offer.
