Klangspuren
KLANGSPUREN Schwaz in Tirol was set up in 1994 and has since become the biggest and most successful music festival in western Austria with the emphasis on contemporary music. Since its inception, the international KLANGSPUREN FESTIVAL of contemporary music has taken place in September every year. The original concept – to offer contemporary, lively music a professional platform to expand upon in the west too, and reveal the origins and forerunners of New Music – is still the basis of the programme today. In addition to this KLANGSPUREN Schwaz is an employer, communicator and promoter for young composers and musicians through systematic integration in a concert programme and the development of new projects.
KLANGSPUREN Schwaz provides a platform for innovative, progressive, courageous and bold pioneers and visionaries who want to write future music history together. Since 2004 KLANGSPUREN Schwaz, in cooperation with the Frankfurt Ensemble Modern, have held a ten-day international Ensemble Modern Akademie, an internationally renowned educational establishment for students of New Music with well-known composers (Helmut Lachenmann, György Kurtág, Wolfgang Rihm, Michael Gielen, Steve Reich, Johannes Maria Staud, Martin Matalon) as the composers in residence in this master class
Today KLANGSPUREN Schwaz denotes innovation, a cosmopolitan outlook, tolerance, and imparts new, unwieldy ideas, which are far from mundane and they do this with success. Almost all concerts in the past few years have been sold out. Using unconventional advertising methods and advertising spaces – such as the KLANGSPUREN Schwaz Festival programme on 600,000, 1 litre milk cartons and on 300,000 shopping bags for the Tirol supermarket chain MPreis – they have succeeded in addressing a wide audience.
KLANGSPUREN Schwaz has an innovative approach to social welfare institutions, schools, kindergarten and trainee departments, and provides its own programme for culture and music mediation. Amongst others this consists of a programme of supporting events for adults, intensive meetings with composers and musicians – on hikes, mushroom hunting, audio walks – where music does not always have to be the focal point.
Since 2002 KLANGSPUREN Schwaz have regularly run trainee projects, and in 2008 KLANGSPUREN LAUSTARK, a workshop where children and young people get to make music and compose, started up. Since March 2010 KLANGSPUREN MOBIL, a bus laden with all instruments of a symphony orchestra, has been visiting Tirol schools and kindergarten, enabling children to get involved and try everything from double bass to bassoon.
